Scream Free Parenting is a great book for parents no matter if they actually are screamers or passive aggressive or other. Personally I am embarrassed to admit that when it comes to my eldest on the brink of his preteens, I am a screamer. We butt heads all the time and we are often stuck in a power struggle with no real winner. I was happy to have the chance to review this book and I cannot say enough good things about this book. While most parenting books are about whipping your kids into shape and how to get them to comply the writer, Hal Runkel, explains how it's not your kids who need to change; it's you. I strongly believe this and have been telling myself the same thing for years. Children model what we teach them and it is just too much for a child to handle to be in charge of their parents own reactiveness. This book spends the first section letting you down easily by basically telling you it's you, not them, and it's true and a much needed lesson for most parents. The rest of the book teaches you ways to handle your own self and reflecting on your parenting and what you want for your child as well as your fears for them. It also tells stories of real situations and how parents chose to handle them, good and bad. This book has been a great eye opener for me and though I still have a bumpy road ahead of me I feel that it has helped me to be a better parent. I also found myself applying things from the book into my everyday life not just parenting. No matter what your parenting style I think every parent could benefit from this book.
Scream Free Parenting retails at $18.44 CAD for a hardcover (soft cover not yet released) and can be purchased in the US from Amazon and in Canada from Chapters/Indigo.
